About the course

The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training has replaced the Level 5 Diploma in the Lifelong Sector (DTLLS). The course is not only open to teachers who teach in traditional settings such as universities and colleges. The course is also open to instructors, coaches and those who teach on a one to one basis regardless of their geographical location.

Our trainee teachers studying DET come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Many are already teaching in some capacity, or are working as teaching assistants, and are looking to formalise their professional status as a fully qualified teacher, whereas some are new to teaching. Whatever your background, our highly supportive team will discuss your options with you, and support you along your chosen career path!

This diploma qualification in the QCF is recognized as equivalent to the Certificate of Education qualifications in the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ). Focus Professionals encourages use of other evidence from your real work such as assessments, CPD records, lesion plans and schemes of work. We welcome other evidence and do not just rely on assignments. We use NCFE and Edexcel for certification.

Course Structure

The course is offered at level 5 which involves being theoretical and the ability to critically analyse, use specific referencing, and carry out detailed reflection and evaluation. You will be expected to use Harvard referencing and work at the same level as a second year undergraduate candidate.

A minimum 120 credits have to be achieved in order to gain the qualification, which includes a minimum 61 credits at level 5. You are expected to demonstrate at least 100 hours of teaching. This can include any recent teaching you have carried out so long as it is supported by evidence such as session plans, schemes of work and any other official documentation. Holders of the Level 4 Certificate in Education will only be required to evidence up to 80 hours.

There is a Guided-learning requirement of 360 hours. There must be a minimum of 8 observations totalling a minimum of 8 hours. Holders of the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training will only require a minimum of 6 observations totalling a minimum of 6 hours. Any single observation must be a minimum half an hour. There is no stipulated age group for the learners you will be teaching. The most important thing is that your teaching sessions are required to be supported by appropriate session plans and schemes of work. The course involves describing, explaining and some evaluation and referencing.

The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training will be made by the following seven units:

There is no requirement to evidence working with groups of learners to achieve this qualification unless units are undertaken which specify that purpose.

There must be a minimum of eight observations totaling a minimum of eight hours. Any single observation must be a minimum of half an hour.

How is the course delivered?
This is a Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training blended learning course, which will include distance learning, e-learning,observations and face to face workshops .Although we do not make attendance of some course activities compulsory due to varying learner experience, knowledge and understanding of course topics, we reserve the right to request you to attend when learner needs have been identified. You will be supported by an allocated tutor who will also be your assessor.

The course delivery will include eLearning and tutorials. Use of technology is highly encouraged in learning and development. Some assessments can be carried out using Skype, video, webinars or any web conference. Fast track is possible for those who are dedicated to studying at a fast pace, have resources and access to learning opportunities.

How long is the course?

Candidates are able to complete the course within a shorter time depending on a number of factors which includes own commitment and ability to study at a higher level. There is no compromise regarding the quality of evidence which have to be produced to demonstrate competency! Candidates will still be expected to evidence 100 teaching hours and 360 guided learning hours.

Candidates joining the course with evidence of prior learning will obviously be able to complete quicker! This is because the guided learning hours will also reduce. A candidate who joins the course with a substantial number of credits will most likely complete before one who has to start from afresh. The duration of the course therefore depends on your progress.

Please bear in mind this course includes some distance learning candidates will require a lot of self motivation and should be committed and aim to maximise all the learning opportunities available! If a candidate invests more time on the course such as 15 hours a week then they will most likely complete earlier compared to someone who commits only 2 hours.

You are usually expected to complete the course within 12 months from enrolment. We however give you an additional 3 months if you fail to complete during the normal duration which stretches the time period to a maximum 15 months!

Entry Requirements

You will also need to evidence Literacy skills at level 3 and Numeracy at level 2. You will also need to have access to 100 hours of teaching practice. This can include recently completed teaching, which is supported by evidence such as session plans, schemes of works or other official documentation. Please note that at times we are able to offer placements to candidates with appropriate skills as a learning opportunity to evidence the practice requirements of the course.

You are however expected due to the nature of course delivery to have access to the internet, computer and a word processor that can open and produce Microsoft Word Documents ending with the extension '.doc'. Candidates without Microsoft office are advised to consider open software such as Open Office. You however need to ensure your documents are saved and submitted for assessment as word documents ending with the extension '.doc'?
